Bird of prey

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Birds of prey, often called raptors, are hypercarnivorous birds. This means they actively hunt and eat other vertebrates. Their diet mainly consists of mammals, reptiles, and smaller birds.

To be successful hunters, they possess specialized physical tools. They have keen eyesight to detect prey from great distances. Their feet are strong and equipped with sharp talons for grasping. They also have powerful, curved beaks used for tearing flesh. While most hunt live animals, some species are scavengers. These birds, like vultures and condors, eat carrion. Carrion is the meat of animals that are already dead.

Raptors vary greatly in their body shapes and hunting styles. Eagles are typically large and powerful birds. They often have long, broad wings and massive feet. Some, called booted eagles, have feathers covering their legs to the toes. Falcons and kestrels are medium-sized birds with long, pointed wings. These birds are often very swift flyers. Hawks are often medium-sized woodland birds. They hunt by making sudden dashes from a concealed perch. Many hawks have long tails to help them steer tightly through trees.

Harriers are slender, hawk-like birds with long legs. They glide low over grasslands and marshes using keen sight and hearing. Kites have long wings and relatively weak legs. They spend much of their time soaring in the air.

Owls are unique because they are typically specialized for night hunting.

They have nocturnal eyesight and extremely acute hearing. Owls can fly almost silently because of their special feather structure. This structure reduces turbulence as they move through the air. There are also specialized species like the osprey. The osprey is a single species found worldwide that specializes in catching fish. Another example is the secretary bird. This large bird has long, stilted legs and lives in the grasslands of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Vultures are scavengers divided into two distinct biological families. Old World vultures belong to the family Accipitridae. They are found only in the Eastern Hemisphere. New World vultures belong to the family Cathartidae. They are found in the Western Hemisphere. Both groups often have heads that are partly or fully devoid of feathers. Some researchers also consider seriemas to be birds of prey. Seriemas have hooked beaks and prey on vertebrates. However, they have much longer legs and necks than typical raptors.

The way scientists classify these birds has changed over time. Carl Linnaeus originally grouped all birds of prey into one order called Accipitres. He divided them into four genera: Vultur, Falco, Strix, and Lanius. Later, Louis Pierre Vieillot added more ranks like family and genus. He separated the diurnal and nocturnal birds into different tribes. Modern science has since changed these groupings significantly. Today, diurnal birds of prey are split into two different orders. These are the orders Accipitriformes and Falconiformes. Owls belong to a separate order called Strigiformes.

Recent studies have even suggested new ways to group these birds. A 2024 study by Wu et al. proposed a new clade called Hieraves. This clade includes both the Strigiformes and the Accipitriformes. This shows how much our understanding changes with new technology. We also know that migratory behavior is very old in these birds. Some research suggests migration evolved in accipitrid raptors between 14 and 12 million years ago. This is one of the oldest recorded dates for such behavior. Many migratory lineages may have originated in the Southern Hemisphere.

Understanding raptors helps us see how biology and environment connect. Factors like clutch size and hunting strategies shape where they live. The way they move across the world is influenced by ecological barriers. For example, migratory systems in the Americas differ from those in Asia. These birds play a vital role in their ecosystems. They control the populations of other animals. By studying them, we learn how life, diet, and geography work together. They remain some of the most specialized hunters on Earth.
