Evidence of this technology has been found in historical religious texts. A Buddhist text called the Vimalakirti Nirdesa Sutra was discovered in modern Wuwei, Gansu. This text dates to the reign of Emperor Renzong of the Western Xia kingdom. Researchers found hallmarks of clay movable type within the writing. These included deformed or broken strokes and hollow character strokes. This suggests that ceramic movable type may have spread to the Tangut kingdom.
