The history of Bhopal is filled with legends and changing rulers. Some folklore suggests the city was founded by the 11th-century Malwa king, Raja Bhoja.

One story claims the name comes from a dam, or "pal," built by his minister. Another version says the king built a lake called Bhoj Tal to cure himself of leprosy. In the early 17th century, Bhopal was a small village in the Gond kingdom. Dost Mohammad Khan, a soldier in the Mughal army, later established the Bhopal State.

He built the Fatehgarh fort in the 1720s, which helped the village grow into a city.

Bhopal had a unique period of leadership under several women. Between 1819 and 1926, the state was ruled by four women known as Begums.

Qudsia Begum was the first woman ruler. She was followed by her granddaughter, Shah Jehan. Another ruler, Sikandar, was so highly honored by the British that she became a female knight. The Begums were responsible for many important developments. They established the city's waterworks, railways, and a postal system. The last sovereign Nawab, Hamidullah Khan, ruled until India gained independence in 1947.

The leak included about 32 tons of methyl isocyanate, or MIC. This gas caused massive harm to the people of the city. While official records initially noted around 4,000 deaths, some estimates suggest up to 15,000 people died from the accident and related medical issues. The disaster left a lasting impact on the environment. Toxic waste has contaminated the soil and groundwater near the site. This event remains a major part of local social and political discussions.

Today, Bhopal is a major economic and educational hub. It is one of the central financial pillars of Madhya Pradesh. The city's nominal GDP was estimated at INR 44,175 crores for the 2020–21 period.
