Bhilai is a big city in central India. It sits in the state of Chhattisgarh. The city is on the banks of the Shivnath River. This river flows into the larger Mahanadi River.

Bhilai is famous for making steel. The Bhilai Steel Plant is a very large factory. It was started with help from the Soviet Union. This plant makes steel rails for trains. By the year 2007, it made enough rails to wrap around the Earth 7.5 times! You can see a monument of this at a square in the city.

Many people live in this area. The city and its twin, Durg, have over one million people. It is a place for learning, too. There are 59 colleges and universities there. Students go to places like the Indian Institute of Technology Bhilai.

The weather is tropical. This means there are three main seasons. There is summer, monsoon, and winter. The monsoon season brings a lot of rain in July. In the winter, the air is much drier. People can also visit Maitri Bagh. This is the oldest zoo in the state.
