This variety is found in the steppes and disturbed habitats of Southeast Europe and Western Asia. The third and most common subspecies is *Beta vulgaris* subsp. *vulgaris*. This subspecies includes almost all the different cultivated groups used by humans.
The history of beet classification is quite complex. In 1753, the scientist Carl Linnaeus first described the species in his work *Species Plantarum*. At that time, he viewed the sea beet and chard as mere varieties. By 1762, he updated his classification to list the sea beet as a separate species. Today, scientists recognize them as the same species because they can hybridize. This means they can mate to produce fertile offspring. Modern naming for the many cultivated groups now follows the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants.
