Beringia

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Long ago, a huge area of land joined Asia and North America. This place was called Beringia.

It was not just a small path. At its biggest, it was as large as British Columbia and Alberta together.

How did this land appear? During the last Ice Age, the world grew very cold. Much of the Earth's water froze into giant ice sheets. Because so much water was trapped in ice, the sea level dropped. This exposed the ground between the continents.

Beringia was a special home for many living things. It was a refugium, which is a safe place where plants and animals can survive. The area was often wetter than the lands around it. This helped shrubs and trees grow there.

Many animals, like the woolly mammoth, lived in this region. A small group of humans also arrived there from Siberia. They moved into the Americas as the ice began to melt. Eventually, the sea levels rose again. This covered the land bridge and turned it into the Bering Strait.
