Bennet Omalu is a doctor who studies the brain. He was born in Nigeria in 1968. He moved to the United States to study medicine. He became a specialist in two areas. He is a forensic pathologist, which means he studies causes of death. He is also a neuropathologist. This means he studies diseases of the brain.

In 2002, Omalu studied the brain of a football player named Mike Webster. He found a problem caused by many hits to the head. He found a protein called tau in the brain. This protein can build up in clumps. These clumps can change how a person thinks or feels. He called this condition CTE. This stands for chronic traumatic encephalopathy. It is a disease caused by repeated head injuries.

Omalu found CTE in many other retired football players. He also found it in military veterans. His work helped people learn about the risks of head hits. In 2016, the American Medical Association gave him a top honor. This was for his work on CTE. He continues to teach and lead research to help keep people safe.
