These tumors stay in one spot. They do not spread to other parts of the body. This is called metastasis.

BENIGN AND MALIGNANT TUMOUR

Benign tumors usually grow slowly. They often have a thin skin around them. This skin is a fibrous sheath. It helps the tumor stay in one place. Some tumors are just moles on the skin. Others are called lipomas. These are lumps made of fat cells.

Even though they are not cancer, they can be harmful. A growing tumor can cause a mass effect. This means it presses on nearby parts of the body. This pressure can hurt nerves. It can also slow down blood flow. Some tumors make too many hormones. This can cause health problems. In some places, like the brain, they can be very dangerous. Doctors may use surgery to remove them. Most of the time, the tumor does not come back after it is gone.
