These are the Belogradchik Rocks. They sit on the western slopes of the Balkan Mountains. The rocks come in many colors. Most are red or yellow. Some rocks are very big. They can reach 200 meters in height.

These shapes formed over millions of years. Long ago, this area was a shallow sea. Rivers brought sand, clay, and gravel into the sea. These layers piled up to make sandstone and conglomerate. A conglomerate is a rock made of many small pieces. Over time, these layers became hard. A hot and dry climate made iron oxide. This is a substance that gives the rocks a rusty red color.

Later, the Earth's crust moved and folded the land. This created cracks in the rock. Rivers and weather then caused erosion. Erosion is when wind or water wears away rock. This process carved the cracks into small valleys and tall shapes.

These are called the Belogradchik Rocks. They sit on the western slopes of the Balkan Mountains. Many of these rocks are very tall. Some reach up to 200 meters in height. They come in colors like red and yellow. People often name the rocks after things they look like. You might see a rock shaped like a lion or a camel. There are also rocks named after people, like a schoolgirl or a shepherd boy. These shapes make the area a very special place to visit.

How did these shapes form? It was a very slow thing that happens over millions of years. Long ago, during the Permian period, the land began to fold. Later, in the Triassic period, this area was the floor of a shallow sea. Rivers carried sand, clay, and gravel into the sea. These materials piled up into thick layers of sandstone and conglomerate. A conglomerate is a rock made of many small pieces glued together. During the Jurassic period, these layers became firm. A hot, dry climate created iron oxide, which is a substance that makes the rocks look rusty red.

About 45 million years ago, the land moved again. The rising ground caused the rocks to crack. This created vertical and horizontal rifts, which are long breaks or cracks. Over time, rivers and weather caused erosion. Erosion is when wind or water wears away the surface of the land. The water flowed into the cracks and carved them out. This turned the rifts into small valleys and steep slopes. These separate blocks of stone are the rock figures we see today. The rocks are part of the Alpine variety of mountains.

These rocks are very important to the land and its history. The Bulgarian government named them a Natural Landmark. They are also the only home for a special plant. This plant is called Hieracium belogradcense. It is a critically endangered plant that grows nowhere else.

In 1949, the rocks were declared a natural monument. Later, in 1987, they were added to the Bulgarian National Register of Natural Landmarks. In 1984, they were put on a list to potentially become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. People from all over come to see them.

Visiting the rocks is a way to see history and nature together. Many tourists go to the nearby town of Belogradchik. They often visit the Belogradchik Fortress too. The fortress actually uses the natural rocks as part of its defense. You can also visit the Magura Cave or the Baba Vida fortress. Some people visit to hear the old legends about the rocks. One legend tells of a nun and a monk being turned to stone. Another tells of a schoolgirl, a bear, and a dervish. These stories make the beautiful landscape feel even more magical.

These structures sit on the western slopes of the Balkan Mountains, also known as Stara Planina, in northwest Bulgaria. They cover a large area of 20 square kilometers. The rocks are famous for their striking colors, which range from bright yellow to a deep, rusty red. Some of these individual stone formations reach heights of up to 200 meters. Because of their unusual shapes, they have become a major tourist attraction and a protected natural landmark.

The geological history of these rocks began approximately 230 million years ago during the Permian period. At that time, tectonic cycles were folding the Earth's crust to create the Balkan Mountains. During the subsequent Triassic period, the region was covered by a shallow sea. Rivers carried massive amounts of gravel, sand, and clay into this sea basin. Over time, these sediments piled up into thick layers of sandstone and conglomerate. A conglomerate is a rock composed of many small pieces of stone glued together. As these materials sat in the water, the individual pieces became well-rounded.

During the Jurassic period, these layered materials underwent a process of hardening. Over a span of 20 million years, the sediments were held together by a sand-clay solder or silicon. The environment was also very hot and dry during this time. This climate caused the formation of hematite, which is a type of iron oxide. The presence of hematite is what gives the Belogradchik Rocks their characteristic red color. As the Earth's crust eventually settled, lighter sandstones merged with the heavier red conglomerates to create the complex layers seen today.

The current shapes of the rocks were shaped by massive tectonic movements. About 45 million years ago, the early Alpine tectonic cycle began to form large anticlines, which are upward folds in rock layers. As the Belogradchik anticline rose, the limestone and conglomerates in its core began to crack. This movement created both vertical and horizontal rifts, or deep breaks, in the ridge. Natural forces like vertical erosion and surface rivers then worked on these cracks. The water and weather carved the rifts into small valleys and steep slopes. This process left behind the separate, vertical blocks of stone that we recognize as rock figures today.

The rocks are organized into several distinct geographical groups. The central group is located near the town of Belogradchik and contains many famous shapes. These include the Madonna, the Lion, the Camel, and the Schoolgirl. A second group of Alpine-style rocks lies to the west and is surrounded by steep precipices. The third group is found to the east, near the Latin Gate and the Lipenik Cave. A fourth group sits between the villages of Borovitsa and Falkovets, featuring the Pine Stone and the Bee Stone. Finally, a fifth group is located between the villages of Gyurgich and Belotintsi.

These formations are of great scientific and environmental importance. They serve as the only known habitat for a critically endangered plant called Hieracium belogradcense. This plant is an endemic species, meaning it is found nowhere else on Earth. Because of their beauty and rarity, the rocks have received many official honors. The Bulgarian Committee of the Natural Environment declared them a natural monument in 1949. In 1987, they were added to the Bulgarian National Register of Natural Landmarks. They were also placed on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status in 1984.

Many people visit the region to explore the connection between nature and human history. The nearby Belogradchik Fortress actually uses the massive rock formations as part of its natural defense system. Visitors often combine a trip to the rocks with visits to the Magura Cave or the medieval Baba Vida fortress. Local legends also add a layer of mystery to the landscape.
