The Belgian Revolution was a major change in Europe. It turned the southern provinces into a new, independent country called Belgium. Before this, these lands were part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. This large kingdom was created in 1815 after the defeat of Napoleon. The goal was to make a strong land north of France.

However, the people living in the south were not happy. They felt the rules were not fair to them. They wanted more power to make their own choices.

Many different problems caused this unhappy feeling. The people in the south were mostly Roman Catholic. In the north, most people were Protestant. This difference in religion caused a lot of tension. The south also felt they had too little say in the government. Even though they made up 62% of the people, they only had 50% of the seats.

Most important jobs were held by people from the north. The south also had to help pay for the north's large debts. This felt very unfair to the people living in the south.

Everything changed suddenly in August 1830. People in Brussels went to see an opera called La Muette de Portici. The story in the opera was about people fighting for their freedom. After the music ended, the crowd began to riot in the streets.

Protesters took control of important places in the city. They even used a new flag to lead their groups. King William I sent his sons to stop the fighting. His son, Crown-Prince William, tried to find a peaceful way to fix things. But the King wanted to use his army instead.

Fighting continued as the southern people fought for their new land.

A new group called the Provisional Government was formed in Brussels. They declared that the south was now independent on October 4, 1830. Major leaders from Europe met at the London Conference to discuss this. They included leaders from Austria, the United Kingdom, France, Prussia, and Russia. At first, they did not all agree on a new Belgium. Eventually, they recognized Belgium as its own country. In 1831, Leopold I became the first King of the Belgians.

Even after the new country started, there was still conflict. King William I tried to take the land back in a military campaign. This was known as the Ten Days' Campaign. He failed because the French military stepped in to help Belgium.

Finally, the two sides signed the Treaty of London in 1839. This treaty made the independence of Belgium official and permanent. This event changed the map of Europe forever. It showed how much people wanted to rule themselves.
