The geography of the region creates a landscape of rapid changes. The city sits at an altitude of about 750 meters above sea level. It is located near the Arabian Sea, with the Markandeya river flowing nearby. These features cause swift changes in topography, vegetation, and climate. The area has a tropical savanna climate, known as Aw in the Köppen classification. This means the weather is generally pleasant throughout the year. The city experiences heavy monsoon rains from June through September. Winter is the coldest season, often recording the lowest temperatures in Karnataka. In April, the area sometimes experiences hail storms.

Belagavi has a deep history involving many different ruling powers. The city was founded in the late 12th century by the Ratta dynasty. Originally, the city was called Venugram, which means "village of bamboo" in Sanskrit.

In 1204, a Ratta official named Bichiraja built the Kamal Basadi, a Jain temple. Over the centuries, the region changed hands many times. It became part of the Yadava dynasty in the early 13th century. Later, it fell under the rule of the Vijayanagara Empire and the Bahmani Sultanate. The Adil Shah dynasty also strengthened the local fort and built the Safa Mosque. By 1686, the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb took control, renaming the city Azamnagar.

Following the decline of the Mughal Empire, the Maratha confederacy took control. In 1776, the region was ruled by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. After the British defeated Tipu Sultan, they annexed the region in 1818. The city served as a major military installation for the British Raj. This was due to its proximity to Portuguese-controlled Goa. During this era, Queen Kitturu Chennamma led an armed rebellion against the British in 1824. In 1924, the city hosted the 39th session of the Indian National Congress.

Economically, the city has grown from small industrial beginnings. A century ago, an entrepreneur named Babu Rao Pusalkar started a small unit. This helped transform the city into a base for hydraulics and foundries. Today, the district is a major source of meat, poultry, fish, and vegetables. It also produces mining goods and wood. The district contains rich deposits of bauxite, which supports Hindalco Industries. Uranium deposits have also been found in the nearby village of Deshnur. A new Special Economic Zone is being established to support the aerospace and automotive industries.

The military remains a core part of Belagavi's identity. The city continues to host important armed forces installations. It is home to the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre.
