Being and Nothingness

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

In 1943, a philosopher named Jean-Paul Sartre published a very important book.

Its title is "Being and Nothingness." This work explains his ideas about existentialism. Existentialism is a way of thinking about how humans live. The book looks at how we think and how we see things. It also explores big ideas like freedom and choice. Sartre wanted to understand what it means to be a person. This book is still studied by many people today.

Sartre describes two different ways of being. The first is "being-in-itself." This is how objects, like a rock or a table, exist. They are just what they are and cannot change.

The second is "being-for-itself." This is how human consciousness works. Unlike a table, a person can think and choose. Sartre says our existence comes before our essence. This means we are born first and then we define ourselves. We are not stuck being just one thing forever.

Sartre developed these ideas while studying other thinkers. He was influenced by a man named Martin Heidegger.

Sartre read Heidegger's work while he was a prisoner of war. He also used ideas from Edmund Husserl. Husserl taught that consciousness is always about something. This means you cannot just "think" without thinking about a thing. Sartre also looked at the ideas of René Descartes. Descartes famously said we know we exist because we think. Sartre took this starting point but moved in a new direction.

One famous idea in the book is "bad faith." This is when people lie to themselves about their freedom.

Sartre uses the example of a café waiter. The waiter might act exactly like a machine. He might pretend his job is his entire identity. By doing this, he denies that he is a free human. He is pretending he has no choice in how he acts. This is a way to avoid the hard job of being free. People can also use bad faith to hide from their true selves.

Sartre also writes about how other people change our world. He calls this "the look." When another person looks at you, you feel like an object.

You might suddenly feel watched or judged. This can feel like a threat to your own world. It is like seeing a mannequin and thinking it is a real person. For a moment, your view of reality shifts. You realize that other people have their own views too. This makes the world feel much bigger and more complex.
