These hives were arranged in orderly rows, three levels high. This setup could have held around 100 hives and more than one million bees. Such an operation could produce massive amounts of honey and beeswax annually. This proves that 3,000 years ago, beekeeping was already a sophisticated commercial activity.

Scientific understanding of bees changed deeply during the 18th century. Natural philosophers began to study the internal biology of the colony. Scientists like René Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur used glass-walled observation hives. This allowed them to see the bees' activities directly. However, early scientists were still confused about how queens were fertilized. Some thought a "miasma," or vapor, from drones was responsible. It was François Huber who finally proved how mating works.

Huber showed that drones physically inseminate queens high in the air, far from the hive. Because of this work, Huber is often called the "father of modern bee-science."

Modern technology was completed by the American Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth in the 19th century. He was the first to make practical use of the "bee space" discovered by Huber. By building frames that respected this gap, Langstroth created the movable comb hive. This invention allowed beekeepers to inspect individual wax combs easily.
