The construction process follows a specific sequence of steps. Beavers begin by diverting a stream to reduce the pressure of the water flow. They then drive branches and logs deep into the stream bed mud to establish a sturdy base. To build the superstructure, they use a variety of materials including sticks, rocks, mud, grass, leaves, and bark from deciduous trees. Beavers are incredibly strong and can transport materials weighing as much as they do. They may drag logs along mudslides or float them through man-made canals to reach the site. Once the water reaches a sufficient depth to create a protective moat around their lodge, they begin building the lodge itself.

Beavers use different materials depending on what is available in their habitat. While they prefer mud and branches, they will use rocks if those materials are scarce. For example, a dam on Bear Creek in California uses rocks for construction. The size of the materials varies greatly. Beavers can use trees with diameters approaching 30 centimeters, though the average is closer to 15 centimeters. Some recorded cases show beavers felling much larger trees. In these instances, the logs are not structural parts of the dam. Instead, the beavers use the bark for food or to reach higher branches. They are powerful enough to cut a sapling with a single bite. To fell a wide aspen, they gnaw an hourglass-shaped groove around the trunk for about 20 minutes.

These structures can reach enormous scales. Most dams range from a few meters to about 15 meters in length. However, the largest known beaver dam is located in Wood Buffalo National Park in Alberta, Canada. This massive structure is 590 meters long. NASA satellite imagery shows that this dam did not exist in 1975 but appeared in later images. It is actually a combination of two original dams and contains two or more lodges. Many species depend on the habitats created by these dams. For instance, salmon and trout benefit from the calm, deep water. These ponds serve as nurseries where juvenile fish can hide from predators and grow without fighting strong currents. A study showed that beaver dams provide many benefits for fish, including increased habitat heterogeneity and invertebrate production. In Alberta, studies found that beaver ponds support much higher populations of frogs and toads than free-flowing streams. Songbirds also benefit from the increased plant diversity that dams encourage.

Despite these benefits, beaver dams can cause disruption. Flooding can damage property or wash out railroad tracks, potentially causing derailments. In Tierra del Fuego, beavers are considered a plague because they flood thousands of acres. This is because the local trees cannot regrow through coppicing like North American trees can. However, modern solutions often involve low-maintenance flow devices rather than just trapping the animals. Understanding the complex relationship between beavers and their environment helps us manage these powerful ecosystem engineers.
