The ice-free area in late summer has grown much larger. In September 2012, the ice boundary retreated very far north. Scientists have also discovered "rotten ice." This new ice is thinner and weaker than ice found in the past. 
The geography includes many landforms and river systems. The Mackenzie River is the longest river in Canada. It empties into the Canadian part of the sea west of Tuktoyaktuk. 
Human activity in the Beaufort Sea focuses on natural resources and fishing. Between the 1950s and 1980s, people discovered petroleum and natural gas under the shelf. The United States adopted a management plan in 2009 to prevent overfishing. In 2014, Canada announced it would not consider new commercial fisheries until research shows sustainable stocks. To protect habitats, Canada created Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). These include the Anguniaqvia niqiqyuam MPA and the Tarium Niryutait MPA. 
Wildlife thrives in these waters despite the harsh conditions. The sea hosts one of the largest colonies of beluga whales. Other animals include seals and polar bears. 
A significant geopolitical issue involves a maritime boundary dispute. A wedge-shaped region is claimed by both the United States and Canada. This area sits between Alaska and the Yukon. Canada claims the boundary follows the 141st meridian west. This is based on the 1825 Treaty of Saint Petersburg. Canada uses the "natural prolongation" principle for this claim. The United States argues for the "equidistance" principle. This means the boundary should be a median line equidistant from both coasts. The dispute is important because the wedge may contain large natural reserves. Canada suggests the area could hold 11 billion barrels of oil and 200 trillion cubic feet of gas. 
Despite the disagreement, both nations cooperate on environmental issues. They have initiated joint geological surveys to study the area. Both countries also agree that the boundary should be "equitable." They look to international standards to help resolve the matter. While the border remains unresolved, they work together to protect the maritime environment. This cooperation is essential for managing the changing Arctic landscape.
