Beaufort scale

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Have you ever wondered how people describe a windy day? Sometimes one person says a breeze is light, while another calls it strong. To fix this, people use the Beaufort scale.

This is a way to measure wind speed by looking at what the wind does. It relates the wind to what we see on land or at sea. This scale is very important for safety. It helps sailors and pilots know what to expect.

The scale works by looking at specific signs in nature. At level 0, the sea is like a mirror.

As the wind grows, you see ripples and then small waves. At level 2, you can feel the wind on your face.

By level 6, large waves form and white foam appears. On land, you might hear wind whistling in wires. At the highest level, level 12, the air is filled with spray.

The sea looks completely white because of the driving spray.

A man named Francis Beaufort created this scale in 1805.

He was a hydrographer in the British Royal Navy. Before him, sailors had no standard way to report weather. Their descriptions were often just their own opinions. Beaufort made a system with 13 classes, from 0 to 12.

He used the sails of a ship to show wind strength. Later, the scale was used on the voyage of the HMS Beagle. This happened between 1831 and 1836.

Many things have changed since the scale was first made. In 1916, the descriptions changed to look at the sea.

This was because steam power became more common than sails. In 1923, George Simpson helped link the scale to wind numbers.

Now, we use math to find the exact wind speed. For example, level 10 starts at 48 knots.

Some places like Taiwan even use an extended scale up to 17. This helps them track very strong typhoons.

You can see this scale working in your own life.

Weather reports often use these terms to warn the public. If a gale is coming, people know to stay safe.

In the United States, a force 12 is a hurricane warning.

In Canada, level 12 is called a hurricane force wind. It is a tool that connects what we feel to real science. Even today, it helps ships navigate the big, blue ocean.
