Bayelsa State

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Bayelsa is a state in Nigeria. It sits in the Niger Delta. This area has many rivers and wetlands. The Atlantic Ocean is near the southern border. Rivers like the Niger and Forçados flow nearby.

Because there is so much water, building roads is hard. Many towns are surrounded by water. People often use boats to travel. The state is home to the Ijaw people. They speak the Ijaw language. Other groups like the Urhobo also live there.

Bayelsa is very important for oil and gas. The Oloibiri Oilfield is here. This is where oil was first found in Nigeria. The state makes a lot of the country's oil. It also has a very large supply of gas.

But the oil can cause problems. Oil spills can hurt the land and water. This makes it hard to farm or fish. The air can also get dirty from soot. This soot is a black powder. It can make people sick. The state also faces big floods. These floods happen when seawater rises. In 2022, a flood moved many people from their homes.
