Long ago, a big fight happened in India.
The Nawab had a very large army. He had many soldiers and war elephants. But the British won the fight. This happened because a leader in the Nawab's army did not help him.
This win changed things for a long time. The British gained much power and wealth. They began to rule more land in India.
In 1757, a big battle took place in India. It was called the Battle of Plassey.

Robert Clive led the British forces.
Clive won the battle through a secret plan. He bribed Mir Jafar, a top leader in the Nawab's army. Clive promised to make Mir Jafar the new ruler. During the fight, Mir Jafar and his men did not join the battle. This helped the British win.
This victory changed history. The British gained great wealth and power. They began to control much of India and Burma over the next hundred years.
The Battle of Plassey was a very important fight in history. It took place on June 23, 1757, in a place called Palashi. This area is near the Hooghly River in West Bengal.

The battle happened because of many disagreements between leaders. Siraj-ud-Daulah was the last independent Nawab of Bengal. He took over after his grandfather, Alivardi Khan, died in 1756.

Robert Clive led the British forces during the fight. He was a colonel who wanted to win back control of Calcutta.
Clive used a secret plan to win the battle. He made a deal with Mir Jafar, who was the commander in the Nawab's army. Clive promised to make Mir Jafar the new Nawab. During the battle, Mir Jafar and other leaders did not join the fight. They kept their troops near the field but stayed still. Because of this inactivity, the Nawab's army was defeated. The whole battle lasted about 11 hours.
This event changed the future of the Indian subcontinent. The British East India Company gained a lot of wealth and influence. They used this money to build a much stronger military. Over the next hundred years, they expanded their control into many other lands. They eventually pushed out other European powers like the French and the Dutch. This battle was a key step in building the British Empire in South Asia.
The Battle of Plassey was a decisive military engagement that fundamentally altered the history of South Asia. It occurred on June 23, 1757, at Palashi, located on the banks of the Hooghly River in West Bengal.
The conflict arose from deep political and economic tensions between the Nawab and European mercantile companies. Siraj-ud-Daulah became the last independent Nawab of Bengal in 1756 after the death of his grandfather, Alivardi Khan.
During the occupation of Calcutta, a tragic event known as the Black Hole massacre occurred. After the British garrison surrendered, many prisoners were confined to a small, cramped dungeon in Fort William. Of the 146 prisoners placed inside, only 23 survived the intense heat and lack of air.
The battle itself was shaped by the global context of the Seven Years' War. Because of their European rivalry, the French East India Company sent a small contingent to support the Nawab.
To overcome this disadvantage, Robert Clive engaged in a complex conspiracy with high-ranking officials within the Nawab's own government.
The consequences of the victory were immediate and profound for the British East India Company. The Company gained immense wealth and significant political influence over the new Nawab, Mir Jafar. They used these resources to secure trade concessions and recover previous financial losses. This newfound revenue allowed the British to expand their military strength significantly. They eventually used this power to push out other European competitors, such as the Dutch and the French, from South Asia.
Ultimately, the Battle of Plassey is viewed by historians as a pivotal moment in the establishment of colonial rule in India. It transformed a commercial trading entity into a dominant political power. The victory at Plassey set the stage for the complete takeover of Bengal in 1773. From that point, the British trajectory moved toward the systematic expansion of the British Empire across the subcontinent. The shift from trade to territorial governance began on the banks of the Hooghly River in 1757.
