Harold had to march south very fast. The two armies met near Hastings on October 14.

Harold's men mostly fought on foot. William's army had horses and archers. The fight lasted from morning until dark. The Normans used a clever trick. They pretended to run away in fear. When the English chased them, the Normans turned back to fight. Harold died during the battle. William won and became king on Christmas Day.
