Battery electric vehicle

A battery electric vehicle, often called a BEV, is a type of vehicle that relies exclusively on electrical energy.

This energy is stored in an on-board battery pack. The battery powers one or more electric traction motors. These motors provide the propulsion needed to move the vehicle. Because they use only electricity, BEVs have no fuel tanks. This makes them different from hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Hybrids use both electric motors and internal combustion engines. They also differ from fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), which use fuel to create electricity.

To make the vehicle move, the system uses motor controllers. These controllers modulate the output of engine power and torque. This process allows the vehicle to function without certain parts found in gas cars. For example, BEVs do not need clutches or complex transmissions. They also do not require the sophisticated engine cooling systems used in internal combustion engines. To replenish their energy, drivers plug the vehicle into a charging station or the electrical grid. Some locations even use battery swap stations. These stations allow a driver to get a new, charged battery instead of waiting to plug in.

There are many different types of battery electric vehicles in use today. While many people think of passenger cars, the technology applies to many machines. This includes buses, trucks, motorcycles, scooters, and even bicycles.

Some electric vehicles are even used on rails. In Japan, battery electric multiple units (BEMUs) operate commercially. These railcars charge via pantographs while driving on electrified lines or at special stations. They can also use battery power on lines that are not electrified. In cities, battery electric trams can operate without overhead wires. This is helpful in historic city centers where wires might not look good.

Humans have been experimenting with this technology for over a century. During the 1880s, Gustave Trouvé, Thomas Parker, and Andreas Flocken built experimental electric cars. Practical battery electric vehicles began to appear in the 1890s. In 1931, battery-powered milk floats began to expand. By 1967, Britain held the largest electric vehicle fleet in the world. In the modern era, sales have grown rapidly. In September 2016, global sales of highway-capable light-duty pure electric cars passed one million units. The Tesla Model Y is currently the top-selling electric car in history, with an estimated 3.4 million sales.

Science has improved the efficiency of these vehicles through better battery technology. Modern lithium-ion batteries have a much higher energy density than older lead-acid batteries. Energy density measures how much energy a substance holds in a certain space. Lead-acid batteries have an energy density of 0.36 MJ/L. In contrast, lithium-ion batteries have an energy density between 0.9 and 2.63 MJ/L. This makes them 2.5 to 7.3 times more efficient. However, petroleum-based fuels still have much higher energy densities. Gasoline ranges from 34.2 MJ/L, while ethanol is around 24 MJ/L. Even so, electric motors are very efficient. BEVs can travel roughly three times further per MJ of stored energy than similar internal combustion vehicles.

We see these vehicles performing important jobs in many cities. In Chattanooga, Tennessee, nine electric buses have carried 11.3 million passengers since 1992. In Australia, the Tindo bus uses electricity from a solar PV system at a central station.

Large scale transport also uses this technology. The China Zorrilla ferry is the largest battery electric vehicle ever built. It measures a great length and uses a 40 MWh battery system.

Even small delivery tools like the StreetScooter van are used by companies like DHL to deliver mail.

Battery electric vehicles are closely connected to global efforts to reduce pollution. Because they have zero emissions during use, they can significantly reduce pollution in cities. This technology is also helping to reduce dependence on oil. Many governments are now pledging billions of dollars to fund the development of electric vehicles. This support helps improve battery technology and charging infrastructure. As more people use electric bikes and cars, the way we move through the world continues to change.
