These machines were used in many famous events, such as the Crusades and the Sack of Rome in 410. They were so important that they changed how people built defensive walls.

Even though they are very old, battering rams are still used today. You will not see huge wooden logs on wheels anymore, though. While the massive wooden engines of the past are gone, the concept survives in modern technology. Law enforcement and military personnel still use smaller, hand-held versions to breach locked doors.

These modern tools are often called enforcers. Some contemporary models even incorporate a pneumatic cylinder. This device uses compressed air to drive a piston, which significantly increases the momentum of the strike. This shows how the fundamental principle of using concentrated force to overcome an obstacle remains relevant today.
