Its global headquarters are located in Ludwigshafen, Germany. The company operates a massive network of subsidiaries and joint ventures in more than 80 countries. This network includes six integrated production sites and 390 other production sites. These facilities are spread across Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, and the Americas. BASF serves customers in over 190 countries. It supplies essential products to a wide variety of different industries.

The company's history began with the production of synthetic dyes.

Friedrich Engelhorn founded the company on April 6, 1865, in Mannheim, Germany. He originally worked with coal tar to extract aniline for making colors. The company eventually moved its plant to the other side of the Rhine river. This move occurred because the town council of Mannheim feared air pollution.

By 1866, the dye production processes were moved to the new Ludwigshafen site. In 1869, chemist Heinrich Caro developed a synthesis for alizarin, which is a red dye. By 1901, dyestuffs made up about 80% of all BASF production.

Scientific breakthroughs allowed the company to expand its chemical reach.

Between 1908 and 1912, Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch developed the Haber-Bosch process. This process made it possible to synthesize ammonia, which is a major source of nitrogen. After acquiring exclusive rights in 1913, BASF began producing fertilizers.

Other chemical advancements included the contact process for producing sulfuric acid. Rudolf Knietsch led research that allowed the company to produce 98% concentration acid. This was a significant improvement over the previous 80% concentration produced by the lead chamber process.

In 1925, BASF merged with several other German chemical companies. This merger created a massive conglomerate known as IG Farben. Under the leadership of Carl Bosch, BASF lost its independence during this merger. IG Farben became a central part of the economy in Nazi Germany. The conglomerate cooperated with the National Socialist government to profit from guaranteed prices. During this era, the company produced Zyklon B, a lethal gas used during the Holocaust.

The company also used forced and slave labor extensively.

The scale of these activities was immense and deeply harmful. IG Farben built a 24 square kilometer chemical factory in Auschwitz. This was the largest chemical factory in the world at that time. By 1943, nearly half of all IG Farben workers were forced laborers. This group included drafted Germans, foreign workers, and prisoners of war. Additionally, the company used 51,445 concentration camp laborers. It is estimated that between 31,500 and 33,500 of these inmates died from starvation, disease, or exhaustion. Following the war, the Allies dissolved IG Farben in 1945.

BASF was reconstituted from the remnants of IG Farben in 1952.

This rebuilding occurred during the German economic miracle. Since then, the company has expanded its product range to include synthetics like nylon and polystyrene. In the 1960s, BASF began building production plants in many foreign countries. These included locations in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, and the United States. Between 1990 and 2005, the company invested €5.6 billion in Asian sites. These sites are located near Nanjing, Shanghai, and Zhanjiang in China, and Mangalore in India.

Today, BASF is a massive global entity with significant economic influence. At the end of 2019, the company employed 117,628 people. Over 54,000 of these employees work in Germany. In 2019, BASF reported sales of €59.3 billion. Its income from operations before special items was approximately €4.5 billion.
