The plant moved to the other side of the Rhine river. This was because the people in Mannheim feared air pollution.

Under the leadership of Carl Bosch, BASF lost its independence during this merger. IG Farben became a central part of the economy in Nazi Germany. The conglomerate cooperated with the National Socialist government to profit from guaranteed prices. During this era, the company produced Zyklon B, a lethal gas used during the Holocaust. The company also used forced and slave labor extensively.

The scale of these activities was immense and deeply harmful. IG Farben built a 24 square kilometer chemical factory in Auschwitz. This was the largest chemical factory in the world at that time. By 1943, nearly half of all IG Farben workers were forced laborers. This group included drafted Germans, foreign workers, and prisoners of war. Additionally, the company used 51,445 concentration camp laborers. It is estimated that between 31,500 and 33,500 of these inmates died from starvation, disease, or exhaustion. Following the war, the Allies dissolved IG Farben in 1945.

BASF was reconstituted from the remnants of IG Farben in 1952.
