Base load

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Electricity is always moving through wires to reach our homes. The base load is the lowest level of demand on an electrical grid. This demand is measured over a certain time, such as one week.

We need to make sure we always have enough power for everyone. This steady need is met by plants that run at a constant rate. These are often called baseload power plants. They provide a solid foundation for the entire energy system.

How does this system work to keep the lights on? Grid operators must balance the supply of power with the demand for it. They look at bids to find the cheapest ways to get electricity. Some plants provide power that stays the same all the time. Other sources are intermittent, which means they change or stop.

To fix this, operators use dispatchable generation. These are plants that can turn up or down very quickly. They help meet the extra demand that happens during the day.

In the 20th century, the way we used power was different. Most of the base load was met by baseload power plants. These plants do not change their output very fast. Some types of plants, like combined cycle plants, take days to start. They can also take days to shut down completely. Today, many grids use more renewable energy sources. This change means we often need flexible generation instead of just steady power.

There are many different types of power plants used for this. Baseload power can come from coal or nuclear plants. It can also come from geothermal, biomass, or hydroelectric sources.

Some gas plants are also dispatchable, meaning they are easy to control. In 2015, Steve Holliday was the CEO of National Grid plc. He said the idea of base load is outdated. However, by 2019, he said nuclear power still has an important role.

Understanding this helps us see how our modern world stays powered. It is like a giant puzzle that must be solved every day. Some pieces are big and stay in one place for a long time. Other pieces are small and move around to fill the gaps.

We use different tools to make sure the grid stays balanced. This balance keeps our technology and homes running smoothly. It is a constant job for the people who run the grid.
