There are about 2,100 different species of barnacles that we know about. Some species, like the Chilean giant barnacle, are even caught for food.

Mating can be a tricky job for animals that cannot move. Many barnacles are hermaphrodites, meaning they have both eggs and sperm. To reach a neighbor, some have penises that are eight times their body length! This is the largest ratio of any known animal. Other species use a method called spermcasting to release sperm into the water.

Barnacles must also deal with many neighbors and enemies in the sea. They often compete with limpets and mussels for space on rocks.

Some barnacles use a strategy called "swamping" to win. They settle in huge numbers so that at least some will survive. Other barnacles, called Rhizocephala, live as parasites. The anatomy of a sessile barnacle is quite unusual. The animal lives inside a carapace made of six hard calcareous plates. It sits upside down, with its body lying on its stomach. The barnacle uses six pairs of long, feathery limbs called cirri to eat. These cirri act as suspension feeders, beating rhythmically to catch plankton and detritus from the water. The animal also has three simple photoreceptors called ocelli. These eyes can only sense light and dark. If a shadow passes over, the barnacle triggers a shadow reflex and closes its opercular plates.

Barnacles follow a specific life cycle with two distinct larval stages. First, a fertilized egg hatches into a nauplius larva. This larva has one eye and three pairs of limbs, but no thorax or abdomen. After undergoing six moults, it transforms into a cyprid larva. The cyprid is the final stage before becoming an adult. This stage is not for feeding; instead, the cyprid explores surfaces to find a place to settle. It uses modified antennules to test the texture, chemistry, and color of a surface. Once a spot is chosen, it cements itself permanently and undergoes metamorphosis.

Reproduction is a major challenge for animals that cannot move. To solve this, many barnacles are hermaphroditic, meaning they produce both eggs and sperm. Some species use a process called pseudocopulation. In this method, the barnacle uses an extraordinarily long penis to reach a neighbor. This organ can be up to eight times the length of the animal's body. This is the largest penis-to-body size ratio of any known animal. Other species, like goose barnacles, use spermcasting. In spermcasting, males release sperm into the water for females to collect.

Not all barnacles live the same way. While most are filter feeders, some are specialized parasites. The superorder Rhizocephala includes barnacles that live inside other crustaceans, like crabs. These parasitic barnacles have very reduced bodies with no carapace or limbs. They use thread-like structures called rhizomes to pull nutrients from their hosts.
