It is known by many names, like the Asian painted frog or the digging frog. Some people in the pet trade even call it the chubby frog. These frogs have dark brown backs with stripes. These stripes can look like copper-brown or salmon pink. They are quite comfortable living in many different places. They can be found in forests, rural areas, or even near cities.

This frog has a very special way of staying safe. When the weather gets dry, they bury themselves underground. They use their back legs to dig down first. Then they use their front legs to push themselves several inches into the soil. They stay there until heavy monsoon rains arrive. Once it rains, they emerge from the ground to find ponds. This is when they call out and breed.

Scientists have studied these frogs for a long time. A British zoologist named John Edward Gray first described them in 1831. He gave them the scientific name Kaloula pulchra. In Latin, the word "pulchra" means beautiful. Other scientists like Cantor and Günther also studied them later. Some researchers found different types of these frogs in places like Hainan. They also looked at a group in Sri Lanka.

Banded bullfrogs have a very specific diet in the wild. They mostly eat small things like ants and termites. Because they have small mouths, they focus on slow-moving prey. They also eat flies, crickets, moths, and earthworms.

Predators like snakes and snails try to eat them. To stay safe, the frog uses deimatic behavior. This means it inflates its lungs to puff up its body. This makes the frog look much larger to a predator. They also leak a white substance that tastes bad.

These frogs are also traveling to new places. They are sometimes moved to other lands through the pet trade. They have been found in places like Taiwan, Singapore, and Guam. They have even been seen near Australia and New Zealand. In the Philippines, they may have arrived by accident on ships. This can make them an invasive species in new areas.
