Bamako is the capital and largest city of Mali, located in West Africa.

The geography of Bamako is mostly flat due to its location on a floodplain. This terrain can make building along the riverfront and its tributaries difficult. However, a significant escarpment rises to the immediate north. This high ground is the remnant of an extinct volcano.

Human settlement in this region dates back to the Palaeolithic era. The fertile Niger River Valley provided an abundant food supply for early inhabitants. These early groups established trade routes linking West Africa to the Sahara. These paths even led to North Africa and Europe as early as the 600s BCE.
Modern history saw many shifts in control and growth. In 1806, the Scottish explorer Mungo Park visited the city. He estimated the population was only 6,000 inhabitants at that time. In 1883, the French established a fort to secure the strategic location on the Niger.
Following independence, the city experienced various political and economic eras. During the 1960s, Mali became a socialist nation with Soviet investment. However, the economy later declined as state enterprises collapsed. The rule of Moussa Traoré was marked by severe droughts and food shortages. In 1990, citizens campaigned for a free-market economy and democracy. Large-scale protests in central Bamako in 1991 led to a military coup. This transition eventually led to Alpha Oumar Konaré becoming president in 1992.
Today, Bamako is a bustling hub of industry and culture. Commercial fishing is a common activity on the Niger River.

The city is organized into six administrative districts called communes. Each commune is managed by a municipal council and an elected mayor. Commune II is a vital area for the industrial sector. Commune III serves as the administrative and commercial heart of the city. It contains the Grand Market and the Dibida market. Recent years have brought significant urban development. New shopping malls and infrastructure projects aim to improve life for all residents.
