He was a central figure in late Baroque architecture across Central Europe. His unique style integrated many different cultural influences. He combined elements from Austria, Bohemia, Italy, and France. This blend created a distinctive look for his many structures. His work remains highly valued by historians and art lovers today.

Neumann's technical expertise grew from a very diverse background. He began his career as an apprentice at a foundry. There, he worked with bells and guns. He later moved to Würzburg in 1711. In 1712, he started studying geometry, architecture, and land surveying. He also served in the Würzburg artillery. He eventually rose to the rank of colonel.

These technical skills allowed him to create precise measurement instruments and detailed maps.

His career as an architect truly began in Würzburg. In 1719, Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn asked him to plan a palace. By 1720, Neumann was leading the construction of the Würzburg Residence. This massive project became his life's work.

He also designed the Schönborn Chapel for the Würzburg Cathedral in 1721. To improve his skills, he traveled to France in 1723. In Paris and Versailles, he consulted with royal architects. He studied contemporary developments to bring new ideas back to Germany.

Neumann worked on several distinct types of buildings. He designed grand secular palaces and important religious churches. His secular works included the Schloss Bruchsal. This palace is famous for its monumental staircase. He also worked on the Dikasterialgebäude at Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. As a church architect, he used centralized and rotunda-based spatial compositions.

This approach reached its highest point in the Basilica of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. He also designed the Abbey Church of Neresheim.

His professional life was shaped by powerful patrons. The Schönborn family provided many of his most significant commissions. Friedrich Karl von Schönborn was a particularly important patron. In 1729, he appointed Neumann as the director of construction for two bishoprics. This role covered military, civil, and ecclesiastical projects. Neumann also managed fortifications, transport, and water engineering. He even taught architecture at Würzburg University starting in 1731.

Neumann's buildings were known for both beauty and strength. One famous example is the Würzburg Residence. UNESCO describes it as one of the most important High Baroque palaces. Another masterpiece is the Basilica of the Fourteen Holy Helpers.

Neumann was very confident in his engineering skills. He reportedly claimed a vault he built was strong enough to survive a cannon firing. This shows how he combined art with military-grade stability.

Neumann died in Würzburg on 19 August 1753. He was buried in the Marienkapelle. His legacy is still celebrated in many ways. His portrait appeared on the German 50 Deutsche Mark banknote from 1991 to 2002.
