A full ballet production is a unified work. It combines choreography, which is the design of the dance moves, with music.

While traditional classical ballets often use elaborate costumes and staging, modern ballets may use simple clothing. This art form has become a global influence. It defines foundational techniques used in many other dance genres and cultures.

The word ballet comes from the French term for a ballet performance. Its roots trace back to the Italian word *balletto*. This is a diminutive of *ballo*, meaning dance. The origin goes even further back to Latin and Greek words. These ancient words mean "to dance" or "to jump about."

This etymology shows how movement has always been a central human activity. Today, the term covers many different styles of dance.

Ballet began in the Italian Renaissance courts during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

Queen Catherine de' Medici helped spread these dances to France. Early court ballets were performed by noble amateurs. These dancers wore heavy, ornamented costumes. These outfits were meant to impress, but they restricted movement. Performers danced in large chambers with viewers on three sides. The invention of the proscenium arch in 1618 changed everything. This architectural feature created a distance between the dancers and the audience. It allowed viewers to better appreciate technical feats.

French ballet reached its highest point under King Louis XIV. In 1661, he founded the Académie Royale de Danse. This academy established standards and certified dance instructors. In 1672, Louis XIV appointed Jean-Baptiste Lully as director of the Paris Opera. Pierre Beauchamp served as the ballet-master there. Their partnership was very influential. They are credited with creating the five major positions of the feet. By 1681, the first professional ballerinas began performing after years of training.

Over time, many distinct styles of ballet emerged. Classical ballet is based on traditional technique and vocabulary. It includes geographic styles like Russian, French, Italian, and English ballet.

Dancers often wore long, flowy tutus to create a soft aura. Neoclassical ballet emerged later as a more abstract form. It often lacks a clear plot or scenery. George Balanchine is considered a pioneer of this style.

The French method is the basis for all training. It is known for precision, fluidity, and elegant lines. In the 1980s, Rudolf Nureyev helped revitalize this style. Some now call it the Nureyev school.

Modern dancers often work with ballet dancers. For example, George Balanchine worked with modern choreographer Martha Graham. Some modern varieties even fuse ballet with non-Western styles. This makes ballet a living, changing art form that evolves with every generation.
