Balkan music

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Balkan music comes from many lands in southeastern Europe. It includes many countries like Greece, Bulgaria, and Serbia. This music is known for its complex rhythms.

Many different tools make these sounds. In Bulgaria, people play bagpipes called gaida. They also use drums and bells. In Greece, musicians use the lira and clarinet. Some Greek dances, like the pentozalis, are very fast.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, people sing Sevdalinka. These are traditional folk songs. They are a big part of the local culture. In 2024, they were added to a special world list of heritage.

Some bands use loud brass instruments. The group Fanfare Ciocărlia has a powerful sound. Many people in Europe love their music. New styles even mix these old sounds with modern beats. Some musicians mix Balkan music with jazz or hip hop. This keeps the traditions alive in new ways.
