Most of the range sits inside Bulgaria, but it also reaches into Serbia. The mountains begin at a peak called Vrashka Chuka on the border. From there, they run eastward across Bulgaria until they reach the Black Sea.
Централен Балкан.jpg

They act like a giant wall between the north and south of the country. This range is so important that it gave its name to the entire Balkan peninsula. In Bulgaria and Serbia, people also call them Stara Planina, which means "old mountain."

These mountains were made through a process called folding.

Centralbalkan.jpg

This happens when layers of rock are squeezed and broken by the Earth. Because of this, the mountains are part of a very large group called the Alp-Himalayan chain. The range is divided into three main sections. The Western Balkan Mountains start at the Serbian border. The Central section contains the highest point, Botev Peak, which is 2,376 meters tall.

Finally, the Eastern Balkan Mountains reach down to Cape Emine by the sea.

History has been written all along these slopes.

For a long time, the mountains served as a natural fortress for the Bulgarian Empire. Many famous battles happened at places like the Varbitsa Pass and the Shipka Pass. In the year 811, a Bulgarian leader named Khan Krum defeated a large Byzantine army here. Later, during the Ottoman rule, people called haiduks used the rugged woods to hide. The mountains also hold memories of heroes like the poet Hristo Botev. Even the name "Haemus" comes from ancient stories about gods and monsters.

Nature is incredibly busy in this mountain range.

The mountains are home to many large animals like brown bears, wolves, and deer. You can find beautiful flowers like the edelweiss growing on the cliffs. There are also many amazing caves, such as Magura and Ledenika. Some of these caves contain very old paintings from long ago.

You might also see the strange, tall shapes of the Belogradchik Rocks. To keep these places safe, many areas are now protected national parks.

Water is a big part of life in the Balkans. The mountains act as a divider for many rivers. Some rivers flow north toward the Danube, while others flow south toward the Aegean Sea. The Iskar River is the longest in Bulgaria and cuts through a deep gap called the Iskar Gorge.

If you love waterfalls, this is a wonderful place to visit. The highest waterfall in the Balkans is called Raysko Praskalo. Many other lovely falls, like Borov Kamak, can be found in the central mountains.

They sit in the eastern part of the Balkan peninsula. The range begins at the peak of Vrashka Chuka on the border between Serbia and Bulgaria. From there, the mountains run eastward across the country of Bulgaria. They eventually reach the Black Sea at Cape Emine. This range is so significant that it provides the name for the entire Balkan peninsula. In Bulgaria and Serbia, the mountains are known as Stara Planina. This name translates literally to "old mountain."

Geologically, these mountains are classified as fold mountains. Fold mountains form when the Earth's crust undergoes intense compression. This pressure causes layers of rock to bend and break. The Balkan Mountains are a relatively young part of the Alp-Himalayan chain. This is a vast system of mountains that stretches across most of Eurasia. The range is divided into two primary parts: the main Balkan Chain and the Pre-Balkans. The Pre-Balkans sit to the north and extend into the Danubian Plain. To the south, the mountains border the Sub-Balkan valleys. These valleys separate the range from the Srednogorie chain.

Scientists and geographers divide the range into three distinct sections. The Western Balkan Mountains stretch from Vrashka Chuka to the Pass of Arabakonak. This section is 4,196.9 square kilometers in size. Its highest point is Midžor, which reaches 2,154 meters. The Central Balkan Mountains run from Arabakonak to the Vratnik Pass. This middle section covers 3,400.9 square kilometers. It contains Botev Peak, the highest point in the entire range at 2,376 meters.

Finally, the Eastern Balkan Mountains extend from Vratnik to Cape Emine. This section is 3,998.6 square kilometers and contains the peak Balgarka. The Eastern section is the lowest part of the entire range.

The history of these mountains is filled with conflict and myth. In ancient times, the range was called Haemus. This name may come from a Thracian word for a mountain ridge. Greek mythology offers two different stories for this name. One myth suggests it comes from "haima," the Greek word for blood. This refers to a battle between Zeus and the monster Typhon. Another myth claims the mountains were formed when King Haemus and Queen Rhodope were transformed into stone.

Throughout the Middle Ages, the mountains served as a natural fortress for the Bulgarian Empire. They were the site of many major battles, such as the Battle of the Varbitsa Pass in 811. During this battle, Khan Krum defeated the Byzantine Emperor Nicephorus I.

The mountains play a vital role in the region's hydrology. They act as a major watershed, or a water divide. This means the peaks separate different drainage basins. Rivers on the north side flow toward the Danube. These include the Timok, Vit, and Yantra rivers. Rivers on the south side flow toward the Aegean Sea. The Iskar River is a notable exception. It is the longest river in Bulgaria. It cuts through the mountains via the Iskar Gorge. The range is also famous for its many waterfalls. The highest waterfall in the Balkans is Raysko Praskalo.

Other notable falls include Borov Kamak and Skaklya.

Biodiversity is a major feature of the Balkan landscape. The mountains are home to most of Europe's large mammals. These include brown bears, wolves, wild boar, chamois, and deer. The terrain is also rich in unique flora. For example, the edelweiss flower grows in the Kozyata stena region. The mountains feature diverse landscapes, from steep cliffs to lush vegetation. There is also a significant amount of karst relief. Karst is a type of landscape formed from the dissolving of soluble rocks. This process has created many caves, such as Magura and Ledenika. Some of these caves contain important post-Palaeolithic cave paintings.

To protect these natural wonders, several areas are strictly regulated. The Central Balkan National Park is one of the largest protected areas in Europe. Its ancient beech forests have been included in the Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe. Other protected zones include Vrachanski Balkan, Bulgarka, and Sinite Kamani Nature Park.
