The court of Urbino served as the primary inspiration for his writing. It was a major cultural center managed by Duchess Elisabetta and her sister-in-law, Emilia Pia. The court hosted many intellectual contests and cultural activities. These included dances, concerts, plays, and recitations. 
Castiglione’s career was marked by significant diplomatic and military service. In 1494, he began humanistic studies in Milan under Demetrios Calcondila and Georgius Merula. He studied Greek and Latin, which were essential for Renaissance scholars. Later, he served as an envoy to King Henry VIII of England. He also participated in the Italian Wars as part of an expedition for Pope Julius II. 
In 1512, Castiglione served as an ambassador from Urbino to Rome. There, he maintained close ties with the artist Raphael. Raphael painted a famous portrait of Castiglione that is now in the Louvre. 
His time in Spain included a significant political crisis in 1527. This was the year of the Sack of Rome. Pope Clement VII suspected Castiglione of having a "special friendship" with the Spanish emperor. The Pope believed Castiglione should have reported the emperor's plans against Rome. Castiglione responded with two famous letters from Burgos to defend his honor. He criticized the Vatican's own inconsistent policies in his letter to the Pope. Surprisingly, the Pope apologized to him. The Emperor also offered him the position of Bishop of Avila.
Despite these successes, Castiglione faced personal and physical hardships. He married Ippolita Torelli in 1516, but she died only four years later.
