The dolphin uses its skull and a fatty organ called the melon to focus sound. It emits highly directed clicks at frequencies between 70 kHz and 100 kHz. These sound waves travel through the water and bounce off objects. When the echoes return, the dolphin uses them to build a map of its surroundings. This system was essential for navigating, finding food, and coordinating with other dolphins. Because the river water was often cloudy, the baiji evolved smaller eyes than oceanic dolphins. Physically, the baiji had several distinct features. Its body was pale blue to grey on the dorsal side, which is the back. Its ventral side, or belly, was white. It possessed a long, slightly upturned beak. Inside its jaws, it had between 31 and 36 conical teeth. The dorsal fin was low and triangular. When the dolphin swam just below the surface, this fin looked like a light-colored flag. This unique appearance is why it was nicknamed the "white-flag" dolphin. Mature males typically reached lengths of about 7.5 feet. The species had a lifespan estimated at 24 years in the wild.

The evolutionary history of the baiji is quite complex. It is not closely related to any dolphins living in the ocean today. Its closest known relative was Parapontoporia, which lived on the western coast of North America. The baiji was one of only five dolphin species to make freshwater its exclusive habitat.
