To move forward, the swimmer uses a rhythmic arm motion. One arm stays underwater to pull the body along. The other arm moves through the air to get ready.

The underwater arm starts with a catch phase. The hand enters the water with the pinky finger first. Then, the arm follows a semi-circular path toward the hip. This is called the power phase. At the middle of the pull, the elbow points down. This helps the swimmer push the most water backward. The arms alternate so the movement stays steady and smooth.

Leg movements are just as important for speed and balance. Most swimmers use a flutter kick, which is similar to the front crawl. One leg moves down while the other kicks up. Sprinters often use six kicks for every one arm cycle. Long-distance swimmers might use fewer kicks to save energy. Some fast athletes also use a butterfly kick underwater. This is a powerful move where both legs move together. This dolphin kick is often the fastest part of a race. It helps swimmers move quickly after they start or turn.

Backstroke has a long and interesting history in racing. It is an ancient style of swimming. Many years ago, people used the elementary backstroke. In that version, both arms moved together at the same time.

The hand enters the water pinky-finger first and pulls at a 45-degree angle. The arm then follows a semi-circular path toward the hip.

At the mid-pull, the elbow points toward the bottom of the pool at a 90-degree angle. This maximizes the amount of water pushed backward to propel the body forward. After the pull, the hand rotates so the thumb side points up for the recovery. The arm then moves in a semicircle over the shoulder to reset the cycle.

Leg movements are essential for both forward speed and body stability. Most swimmers employ a flutter kick, which is similar to the kick used in the front crawl. The legs alternate, with one leg sinking to about 30 degrees before kicking upward. Different types of swimmers use different rhythms. Sprinters often use six kicks per arm cycle to maintain high speed. In contrast, long-distance swimmers may use fewer kicks to conserve energy. Some athletes also utilize a dolphin kick, or butterfly kick, for extra power. This underwater movement is often the fastest part of a race. For example, in a 100-yard race, a swimmer might use the dolphin kick for as much as 60 yards.

There are several historical variants of this stroke. The elementary backstroke involves moving both arms in synchronization, similar to an upside-down breaststroke. While this is easier to coordinate, it is generally slower than the alternating backcrawl. This style was used in the 1900 and 1908 Olympic Games.

This reduces drag and allows for a faster entry. Once underwater, swimmers can travel up to 15 meters before they must break the surface.

Turning and finishing require specific technical skills to avoid penalties. Before 1992, swimmers had to touch the wall on their backs to initiate a turn. Current rules allow swimmers to turn onto their breast to perform a faster tumble turn. They may perform one arm pull while on their stomach before pushing off the wall. For the finish, the swimmer must touch the wall while still lying on their back. They must also remain in a position that is less than 90 degrees from the horizontal. These rules ensure the integrity of the stroke while allowing for modern speed.
