In 1812, the fortress successfully repelled an attack by Napoleon's forces for four months. The building process continued and was completed in 1820. 
The city faced extreme hardship during the 20th century. In 1902, a Great Fire destroyed much of the city. This event left 2,500 families homeless and caused massive property damage. Later, during World War II, German troops captured the city in 1941. The occupation brought terrible suffering to the local population. Many Jews were killed in the city, and others were held in labor camps. 
Rebuilding the city was a massive task for many workers. They cleared rubble and filled in craters caused by bombings. By the end of 1944, the machine building plant was working again. The population began to grow quickly due to urbanization. People moved from rural areas into the city for work. In 1959, the population was 96,000. By 1989, it had grown to 232,000 people. Today, the population of Babruysk is 205,502. 
Modern Babruysk is a center for industry and education. It contains the largest timber mill in Belarus. The city is also known for chemical and metal-working industries. Education is very important in the community. In 2021, there were 38 public schools serving over 24,000 students.
