He was born in Parepare, South Sulawesi, in 1936. His father was an agriculturist from the Bugis-Gorontalese group. His mother was a Javanese noblewoman from Yogyakarta. Habibie was the fourth child in a family of eight. Sadly, his father passed away when Habibie was only 14 years old. He grew up to become a brilliant engineer who studied how things fly.

Habibie studied hard to learn about planes and space.

He went to the Netherlands to study at Delft University of Technology. Because of political disputes, he moved his studies to Aachen, Germany. In 1960, he earned his engineer's degree there. Later, he earned a doctorate in 1965 with a "very good" grade. While working in Germany, he became an expert in how air moves around objects. He even developed special rules for math and science called the Habibie Factor and the Habibie Method.

In 1974, Habibie returned to Indonesia to help his country grow.

He worked to build many new industries like ships and trains. He became the leader of the Nusantara Aircraft Industry. He wanted to make planes right in Indonesia. He used a special way of working called "Begin at the End and End at the Beginning." This meant he focused on making the planes first. In 1995, his team made the N-250 Gatotkaca, a small passenger plane. Because of this work, people call him the "Father of Technology."

Because of his massive contributions to the aerospace industry, he earned the title "Father of Technology" in his home country.

Habibie's scientific expertise focused on the complex physics of flight. While working in Germany, he developed several critical theories regarding how aircraft behave. These include the Habibie Factor, which relates to thermodynamics. He also created the Habibie Theorem for construction and the Habibie Method for aerodynamics.

These mathematical and scientific principles helped engineers understand how to build safer and more efficient aircraft. His research was so advanced that major companies like Boeing and Airbus expressed interest in his work.

His academic journey was shaped by international politics. Habibie originally traveled to the Netherlands to study aviation at the Technische Hogeschool Delft. However, a dispute between the Netherlands and Indonesia regarding West New Guinea forced him to move. He completed his studies at the Technische Hochschule Aachen in Germany instead. In 1960, he earned his engineer's degree, known as a Diplom-Ingenieur. By 1965, he received his doctorate with a "very good" grade, becoming a Doktoringenieur.

In 1974, Habibie returned to Indonesia to lead the nation's industrialization efforts. He was recruited by President Suharto to help develop the country's technological capabilities. Habibie eventually became the CEO of the Nusantara Aircraft Industry, also known as IPTN. To build this industry, he used a unique strategy called "Begin at the End and End at the Beginning." This method prioritized actual manufacturing as the first objective, while treating basic research as a later focus.

He managed ten different state-owned industries by 1991, including sectors for steel, energy, and communications. These industries utilized nearly $2 billion in state funding annually by 1993. Beyond his technical and political roles, he was a dedicated educator. He created several scholarship programs, such as the Overseas Fellowship Program, to help students study STEM fields abroad.
