He was born in Turkey in 1946. He grew up in a place called Savur. His parents wanted him to learn a lot. He studied medicine at Istanbul University. He graduated as the top student there.

Sancar studies how living things fix themselves. He looks at DNA. DNA is the code inside our bodies. Sometimes, sunlight can hurt this code. Sancar studied an enzyme called photolyase. An enzyme is a tiny part that helps make changes in cells. This enzyme uses blue light to fix the damage.

He also studied how cells fix damage in the dark. This is called nucleotide excision repair. He found the parts that cut out the bad parts of the code. He also studied the circadian clock. This is the body's internal clock. It helps our cells follow a 24-hour rhythm. This can help treat things like jet-lag.

In 2015, Sancar won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
