It is the capital of the Al-Zubayr District. The city has a hot desert climate. This means it is very dry and hot. It rains more in the winter than in the summer.

The city has a long history. It was named for a man named Zubayr ibn al-Awwam. He was a companion of Muhammad.

By 2008, about 240,000 people lived in the city. The city has grown quite large. It is now part of the Basra area. That whole area has nearly 3 million people.

Most people in the city are Shia Muslims. There is also a large group of Sunni Muslims. These two groups live together in peace. The city is hard to tell apart from Basra now. It is a busy and growing place.
