The Ayyubid dynasty was a powerful group of Kurdish rulers. They lived during the medieval period in the Middle East. This family started a new state called the Ayyubid Sultanate. They were very important because they changed how people lived in Egypt. They turned Egypt into a major center for wealth and culture. This status lasted until the Ottomans arrived in 1517.

Saladin was the leader who founded the dynasty in 1171. He first worked for a ruler named Nur al-Din. Saladin helped lead an army against the Crusaders in Egypt. He was later made a vizier, which is a high official. After Nur al-Din died in 1174, Saladin became the first Sultan of Egypt. He grew his lands very quickly to include many places. These lands included most of Syria, Yemen, and parts of Mesopotamia.

Saladin's military successes helped define the borders of his empire. In 1187, he won a famous victory at the Battle of Hattin. This win helped him take control of many Crusader states. After Saladin died in 1193, his sons fought over who would rule. His brother, al-Adil, eventually became the sultan in 1200. Later, Sultan as-Salih Ayyub worked to bring the divided lands back together. He successfully ruled most of Syria by the year 1247.

Eventually, Ayyubid power began to fade in different ways. In Egypt, Mamluk generals took control after a Crusader invasion. This meant the Ayyubids no longer ruled Egypt. In 1260, the Mongols attacked and took the rest of their lands. However, a small part of the family stayed in power for a while. They ruled the area of Hama until 1341.

The Ayyubids left a lasting mark on the Islamic world. They built many madrasas, which are schools for Islamic law. These schools helped learning and new ideas grow. They also made Sunni Islam much stronger in the region. Because of their support, Egypt became a leader in politics and trade. People still study their history to understand how the Middle East changed.
