Some of these trees may have lived for 1,000 years. The climate was warm, but the winters were still dark for three months. As the trees fell, fine sediment covered them. The cold, dry air kept them from turning into stone. Instead, the trees were mummified. This means they were preserved like mummies rather than becoming stone fossils.
Many explorers have visited this island over the years. The Inuit lived here in the past. Later, Otto Sverdrup explored the island in 1900 and 1901. He named it after Axel Heiberg, who helped pay for the trip. Norway claimed the land until 1930. In the 1940s, the United States Army Air Forces took photos from the air. In 1955, two geologists traveled across the middle of the island. Later, scientists from McGill University built a research station in 1960. This station helps people study the ice and the ground.
Scientists find many amazing things on the island. They have found fossils of an ancient turtle called Aurorachelys. They also found a bone from a bird named Tingmiatornis. Researchers have even found DNA in the ancient Metasequoia wood. This wood is almost identical to modern plants. One special place is the Lost Hammer Spring. This spring is very salty and stays below freezing. It is one of the coldest and saltiest springs in the Arctic.

Instead, the trees underwent mummification. As the trees fell, fine sediment covered them. The cold and dry Arctic climate then preserved them in this state. This process allows scientists to study the plants in a way that stone fossils do not allow. Researchers have even found double-strand DNA molecules in Metasequoia fossil leaves. When scientists compared the DNA of this ancient wood to modern plants, they found them to be almost identical.
Human history on the island involves many different groups. The Inuit inhabited the island in the past. Later, the explorer Otto Sverdrup visited the island during 1900 and 1901. He named the island after Axel Heiberg, a financial director for a Norwegian brewery. Norway claimed the territory until 1930, but it is now part of Canada. In the late 1940s, the United States Army Air Forces conducted aerial photography through Operation Polaris. In 1955, geologists N.J. McMillan and Souther traveled the interior during Operation Franklin. McMillan made the earliest published glaciological observations of the Bunde Glacier.
Research continues today through the McGill Arctic Research Station. This station was established in 1960 near Expedition Fiord. It includes a research hut, a cookhouse, and two temporary structures. The station typically accommodates between 8 and 12 people. During the early 1960s, the population at the station reached 20 people. The station is active from March to August each year. Scientists use the station to study polar geomorphology, geology, and glaciology. They also study permafrost, climate change, and polar microbiology.
Axel Heiberg Island also serves as a vital Mars analogue for astrobiology. This means the island's environment helps scientists study the possibility of life on other planets. One significant site is the Lost Hammer Spring in the central west region. This spring is the coldest and saltiest of all described Arctic springs. It features a perennial hypersaline discharge of 24% at subzero temperatures. The spring flows through a high, cone-shaped salt tufa structure. Microbes found here do not need oxygen or organic material to live. Because these microbes use simple inorganic compounds, the spring mimics conditions found on Mars, Europa, or Enceladus.
The island's landscape is also shaped by massive ice formations. The White Glacier is a valley glacier located in the Expedition Fiord area. It is a very large glacier with an elevation range that is nearly unmatched. Only the Devon Ice Cap has a larger measured mass balance in the world. The ice thickness of the White Glacier reaches or exceeds 300 meters. Scientists have studied this glacier since 1960 to understand glacier facies, which are different zones of a glacier. Protecting these sites is a modern priority. Because the fossil wood is easily damaged by erosion, Nunavut is considering creating a territorial park. This park might be named Napaaqtulik, which means "where there are trees."
