Avogadro constant

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

In chemistry, scientists need a way to count tiny particles. These particles can be atoms, molecules, or ions. The Avogadro constant is a special number used for this job. It acts like a bridge between a group of things and the number of pieces inside. This group is called a mole.

Using this constant helps us understand how much of a substance we have. It is a very important tool for measuring the world around us.

How does this constant work in a lab? It connects the mass of a substance to the number of particles it holds. For example, it can turn the average mass of one particle into the molar mass. Molar mass is the mass of one whole mole of that substance.

You can also use it to find the volume of particles. If you know the volume of one mole of water, you can find the volume of just one molecule. This works because the constant links the large scale to the tiny scale.

This discovery has a long and interesting history. It is named after Amedeo Avogadro, an Italian scientist. In 1811, he suggested that gas volume depends on the number of particles.

Later, Josef Loschmidt found a way to estimate these particles in 1865.

Jean Perrin later gave the number its name in 1909. He used different methods to find the value. His hard work earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1926.

There are many important facts and numbers to know. Before 2019, a mole was defined by 12 grams of carbon-12. This meant scientists had to measure the constant through experiments.

On May 20, 2019, the rules changed. Now, the Avogadro constant is an exact, fixed number. This new definition makes the mole easier to understand. It is now based on having an exact number of particles in a sample.

You can see how this connects to things you already know. Think about the word "dozen" when you see eggs. A dozen always means twelve items. A mole is just like a dozen, but it is much, much larger.

It helps us turn tiny, invisible things into weights we can measure. Just as a dozen helps a baker, the Avogadro constant helps a chemist. It makes the tiny world of atoms feel real and measurable.
