Before this find, experts thought these creatures lived only in East and South Africa. This discovery changed what we know about them. It showed they lived in Central Africa too. This means they were spread across many parts of the continent.

Finding these fossils helps us see how they lived. Most of the bones found were parts of the jaw. One jawbone was even given the name "Abel."

Scientists looked at the teeth to learn about their diet. They believe these creatures ate foods from the savanna. This includes things like grasses, sedges, and roots. They might have also eaten fruits, flowers, or insects. However, their teeth were not quite built for eating lots of grass.

A team of researchers found the first pieces in 1995. This group was called the Franco-Chadian Paleoanthropological Mission. Many people helped with the work. These included Michel Brunet, Alain Beauvilain, and Yves Coppens. Other experts like David Pilbeam also helped. They found the remains at a place called Koro Toro in Chad. The name bahrelghazali comes from the local region. In Arabic, Bahr el Gazel means "River of the Gazelles."

There are many important facts about these old bones. The fossils were found in a place called Bahr el Gazel. Scientists used special tests to find the age of the rocks. One test suggested the rocks were 3.58 million years old. Other dates suggest the species lived around 3.5 or 3.65 million years ago.

Some scientists think these creatures might be the same as Australopithecus afarensis. This is because the jawbones look very similar. Because there are only a few bones, people still debate this.

We can imagine what life was like for Abel. Koro Toro likely looked like the modern Okavango Delta.

It was a land of wide grasslands and some trees. Many other animals lived there at the same time. Scientists found bones from giraffes, hippos, and even elephants. There were also fish, turtles, and birds near the water. This shows there were lakes or streams nearby. It was a busy home for many different living things.
