It is located in Canberra, the capital of Australia. ANU is a member of the Group of Eight, a collection of leading research institutions. It holds a unique status in the country. It is the only university created directly by the Parliament of Australia. This connection to the government highlights its role in national education and research.

The university's structure is organized into several specialized areas.

The main campus is in Acton and features seven teaching and research colleges. These colleges manage various academic disciplines. For example, the College of Arts and Social Sciences includes many different schools. It contains the Research School of Social Sciences and the Research School of Humanities and the Arts. The latter houses the ANU School of Music. This structure allows for deep, focused study in many different fields.

ANU has a long and complex history of development.

People began calling for a national university as early as 1900. After Canberra was chosen as the capital in 1908, land was reserved at the foot of Black Mountain. World War II interrupted the plans for the school. However, the Chifley government passed the Australian National University Act in 1946. The university also grew by integrating Canberra University College in 1960. This college had been founded in 1929 by Sir Robert Garran.

Many famous scholars have shaped the university over the years.

After its founding, eminent scholars returned from overseas to join the faculty. These included Sir Howard Florey, who helped develop medicinal penicillin. Sir Mark Oliphant, a nuclear physicist, also joined the team. Sir Raymond Firth, a professor of anthropology, was another key figure. These experts helped establish ANU as a major center for global research and discovery.

The university's impact is visible through its impressive numbers and achievements.

The university's endowment was valued at A$1.8 billion in 2018. Its academic success is proven by its faculty and alumni. The university counts six Nobel laureates and 49 Rhodes scholars among its members. It has also educated two former prime ministers and the Governor-General of Australia.

ANU manages several diverse research sites across different locations.

The main Acton campus is a green space with over 10,000 trees. It is bordered by Black Mountain and Lake Burley Griffin. The university also operates the Mount Stromlo Observatory on the outskirts of Canberra. Although the 2003 bushfires destroyed much of Mount Stromlo, research continues. Astronomers now use the Siding Spring Observatory, which holds 10 telescopes. This includes the large Anglo-Australian Telescope.

The university is also a center for social and political engagement.

Students are known for activism, such as the fossil fuel divestment campaign. In 2014, the ANU Council decided to divest from two fossil fuel companies. This decision was defended by Vice Chancellor Ian Young. The university also maintains many global connections through exchange programs. Students can study at prestigious institutions like the University of Tokyo or Imperial College London. These partnerships help connect Australian research to the wider world.
