Their goal was to share Christianity with the Anglo-Saxons.

They traveled to the kingdom of Kent. A king named Æthelberht ruled there. He was a pagan at first. But his wife, Bertha, was a Christian princess. She came from the Franks. She helped the missionaries.

King Æthelberht soon joined the Christian faith. He let the monks preach. He even gave them land for a monastery.

Augustine became the first archbishop of Canterbury. Many people joined the faith. Thousands were baptized on Christmas Day in 597. Augustine also helped start a school. This school trained new priests. He helped set up churches in London and Rochester. Augustine likely died in 604. People later honored him as a saint.
