An auction is a way to buy things.

Auction

A person sells an item. Other people try to buy it. They make bids to show their price. The person who offers the most money wins.

This can happen in many ways. Long ago, people used a candle. When the flame went out, the sale ended. Now, many people use the internet to bid. This lets many people join in from far away. Auctions are still used for many things today.
