There are several distinct types of attentional processes. Selective attention involves prioritizing certain stimuli over others. Sustained attention is the ability to maintain focus over a period of time. Divided attention occurs when a person shares their mental resources across multiple tasks at once. Finally, orienting is the process of shifting focus through space or time. These processes are supported by distributed neural networks. These networks are located in the frontal, parietal, and subcortical regions of the brain. They are also closely linked to working memory, executive functions, and consciousness.

History shows that many thinkers have explored how we pay attention. In the 16th century, Juan Luis Vives argued that closer attention leads to better memory retention. During the 17th century, Nicolas Malebranche suggested attention prevents perceptions from becoming confused. Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz introduced the concept of apperception. He described this as the process where new experiences are transformed by past experiences to form a new whole. Leibniz noted both reflexive, involuntary attention and voluntary, directed attention. Later, Johann Friedrich Herbart emphasized that new experiences must tie to existing mental knowledge. He was also a pioneer in using mathematical modeling to study psychology.

In the 19th century, scientists began measuring the limits of the mind. William Hamilton compared attentional capacity to holding marbles. He suggested that only a limited number can be held before they spill over. William Stanley Jevons expanded this, suggesting people could attend to up to four items. Wilhelm Wundt introduced systematic study to the field. He used a 4 x 4 matrix of letters to study the attentional threshold. Wundt found that people could only see about 3 to 6 letters in a 1/10-second exposure. Franciscus Donders used mental chronometry to measure the time required for mental processes. He developed the subtractive method to estimate how long specific tasks take.

Modern research has provided specific numbers regarding the scope of attention. Wundt’s early suggestion that attention is limited to 3–6 items has been supported by studies on subitizing. Subitizing is the rapid apprehension of small numbers. The scope of attention also changes as people grow. A baby at six months may only have two items in their focal point. By age five, a child can focus on five or more items. This growth happens because the mind learns to grasp more details. As children understand more, they can handle more combinations of elements. For example, three items have six possible combinations, but six items have 720 combinations.

One important way to shift focus is through orienting. This can be exogenous or endogenous. Exogenous orienting is stimulus-driven and automatic. It is often triggered by sudden changes in your peripheral vision. These are called peripheral cues. Endogenous orienting is the intentional allocation of attention based on goals. These are called central cues and require voluntary redirection. Researchers like Posner and Cohen found that these two types differ greatly. For instance, observers can often ignore endogenous cues, but they struggle to ignore exogenous ones.

In the 20th century, the "cognitive revolution" revitalized attention research. In 1953, Colin Cherry studied the "cocktail party problem."
