Every atom has a special number. This number tells us what the atom is. It is the number of tiny parts in the middle. These parts are called protons.

This number is also the charge of the middle. In most atoms, it matches the number of parts outside. These outside parts are called electrons.

Scientists use this number to name each element. It helps them keep everything in order. It is a very neat way to group things!
