He served as the Prime Minister of India during two different periods. His first term lasted only 13 days in 1996. His second term lasted from 1998 to 2004. He was the first non-Congress Prime Minister to serve a full term. Vajpayee was also a co-founder of the Bharatiya Janata Party, known as the BJP. He was a significant figure in Indian politics for over five decades.

Vajpayee's early life in Gwalior shaped his future political views. He was born on December 25, 1924, into a Kanyakubja Brahmin family. His father, Krishna Bihari Vajpayee, worked as a school teacher. Vajpayee studied Hindi, English, and Sanskrit at Victoria College. He later earned a Master of Arts in political science from DAV College in Kanpur. During his youth, he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, or RSS. This organization emphasized self-cultivation and disciplined nation-building. These early experiences influenced his views on Indian nationhood.

His political journey involved several different parties and roles. In 1951, he worked for the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the BJS. He served as a national secretary for the party in the Northern region. After the BJS merged into the Janata Party, he became the Minister of External Affairs in 1977.

He was the first person to speak at the United Nations General Assembly in Hindi. When the Janata alliance collapsed, he helped form the BJP in 1980. He served as the BJP's first president.

Vajpayee was a highly skilled orator and parliamentarian. He was elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house, ten times. He also served twice in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house. He represented several different constituencies, including Lucknow, Gwalior, New Delhi, and Balrampur. His speaking style was even noted by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Nehru once predicted that Vajpayee would become Prime Minister. Vajpayee combined cultural nationalism with a sense of political moderation. He sought to balance traditional values with democratic pluralism.

As Prime Minister, Vajpayee led India through major national changes. In 1998, India conducted the Pokhran-II nuclear tests. This event connected India's national self-assertion to his political doctrine. He also introduced many economic and infrastructural reforms. His government encouraged the private sector and foreign investments. He worked to reduce government waste and promote research and development. He also oversaw the privatisation of some government-owned corporations.

His leadership also involved managing difficult international and domestic challenges. He sought to improve relations with Pakistan through diplomacy. He famously traveled by bus to Lahore to meet Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

India recognized Vajpayee's service with several prestigious awards. In 1992, he received the Padma Vibhushan.
