It sits south of the Eastern Himalayas. Two big rivers flow through it. These are the Brahmaputra and Barak rivers. Assam shares borders with Bhutan and Bangladesh. It also borders many Indian states. A narrow strip of land connects it to the rest of India.

Many people live in Assam. In 2011, there were 31.2 million people. This makes it the largest state in its region by population. The largest city is Guwahati. Dispur is the capital city.

Assam is a very green land. It has rainforests and big wetlands. It also has many grasslands. The land gets a lot of rain. This rain feeds the river systems. You can find many animals here. More than half of the world's one-horned rhinos live in Assam. They live in parks like Kaziranga.
