Aspartic acid is a tiny but vital building block.

It is an amino acid used to build proteins. Proteins are the materials that make up living things. There are 22 different amino acids used to make proteins. Aspartic acid is one of those 22 parts. It is very important for how bodies work. It is known as a non-essential amino acid in humans. This means your body can make it by itself. You do not always need to get it from food.

This molecule has two different forms called enantiomers. One form is called L-aspartic acid. This is the version used to build proteins. The other form is called D-aspartic acid. This form is found in mammals. It does not build proteins. Instead, it helps act as a neurotransmitter. A neurotransmitter helps cells send signals to each other. D-aspartic acid even helps stimulate NMDA receptors.

People first discovered this acid a long time ago. Auguste-Arthur Plisson and Étienne-Ossian Henry found it in 1827. They found it by using a process called hydrolysis. They studied a substance called asparagine. This substance came from asparagus juice. Asparagine had been isolated back in 1806. The scientists originally used lead hydroxide to find it. Today, people use different acids or bases instead.

Aspartic acid does many jobs in nature. In plants, it helps make four other amino acids. These include methionine, threonine, isoleucine, and lysine. These four are essential for humans to eat. In the human body, it is often made from oxaloacetate. This happens with the help of an enzyme. Enzymes are helpers that make things happen faster. In 2014, the global market for this acid was $117 million. Most of it was sold in the U.S., Europe, and China.

We use aspartic acid in many everyday items. It is used to make aspartame. Aspartame is a low-calorie sweetener. It is also used to make superabsorbent polymers. These are materials that soak up liquid very well. About 75% of these polymers go into disposable diapers. Another 20% are used for other hygiene products. It is also used in fertilizers for plants. This helps plants hold onto water and nitrogen.
